Medicare Information
Medicare offers rebates on therapy for psychologists, clinical psychologists, and psychiatrists. In order to be eligible for Medicare rebates, you will need to first acquire a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP. Under COVID policy, this care plan is valid for up to 20 sessions in 12 months (updated on Friday 9th October 2020). After your 6th and 10th session, you will need to go back to your GP to have your care plan reviewed. Counsellors and paraprofessionals are not covered by Medicare rebates.
The standard Medicare rebate amounts change depending on which type of professional you see. For a standard individual session the rebates are: Clinical Psychologist: $128.50 (60 mins).
To easily claim your rebates you can use Medicare’s ‘MyGov’ system for online claiming. You will need to keep a copy of your invoice for each session to do this. Alternatively, you can enquire with your clinician to see if they do Medicare e-claiming. This means that they will submit the claim on your behalf; though you will still need to pay the full session fee up-front if the session was not bulk-billed.
