Light Listening Podcast with Stephen Wolfson – Why am I struggling to control my emotions?

Light Listening is the SYMBYX Biome Podcast for people living with Parkinson’s, care partners, and healthcare providers. Each episode focuses on practical ways to live well today. Topics include both motor and non-motor symptoms, daily routines, relationships, and emerging therapies.

In part one of this two-part series, SYMBYX CEO Dr Wayne Markman speaks with Dr Stephen Wolfson from NeuroCog® about emotional regulation in Parkinson’s. Emotions can feel sharper, quicker, or harder to manage. Consequently, you might feel flooded one moment and flat the next.

This episode explains why that shift can happen when neurological change disrupts the brain’s regulation systems. However, the discussion moves beyond explanation. It also offers simple practices you can use to regain steadiness. Therefore, you can respond with more intention rather than reacting on autopilot.

What you will learn

  • What emotional regulation means in day-to-day life
  • Why Parkinson’s can affect emotional steadiness
  • How stress and fatigue can amplify emotional spikes
  • How to tell the difference between “mood” and regulation changes
  • Practical tools to help you reset and stabilise

Try this after listening

First, choose one situation where emotions rise fast. For example, a rushed morning, a medication window, or a difficult conversation. Next, name one early body signal. Then practise one stabilising step you can repeat. You might slow your breathing, pause before responding, or move to a quieter space.

After that, keep the practice for a week. Because repetition creates familiarity, the skill becomes easier to access under pressure.
