Dr. Stephen Safford Wolfson

Dr. Stephen Safford Wolfson

Founder, Neuroscientist and Clinical Psychologist

Stephen collaborates with clients using effective neurocognitive techniques. Clients increase awareness and see how thoughts, feelings and physical sensations interfere with personal goals. They learn new skills to increase self-control, feel better about themselves, their relationships and their life overall. Progress is tracked through the free Neurocog mobile app with powerful exercises to improve their neurocognitive skills between sessions.

Stephen founded Neurocog and developed the Neurocog System based on his clinical experience and neurodevelopmental research. He was educated and trained in Los Angeles at UCLA, USC, Antioch University, the Southern California Psychoanalytic Institute, and Fielding Graduate University until moving to Australasia in 2015 to earn his PhD in computational cognitive neuroscience at Auckland University in New Zealand. He has registrations in the US, New Zealand and Australia and has worked in private and government agencies providing assessments and treatment for over 20 years.

Medicare Information

Medicare offers rebates on therapy for psychologists, clinical psychologists, and psychiatrists. In order to be eligible for Medicare rebates, you will need to first acquire a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP. Under COVID policy, this care plan is valid for up to 20 sessions in 12 months (updated on Friday 9th October 2020). After your 6th and 10th session, you will need to go back to your GP to have your care plan reviewed. Counsellors and paraprofessionals are not covered by Medicare rebates.

The standard Medicare rebate amounts change depending on which type of professional you see. For a standard individual session the rebates are: Clinical Psychologist: $128.50 (60 mins).

To easily claim your rebates you can use Medicare’s ‘MyGov’ system for online claiming. You will need to keep a copy of your invoice for each session to do this. Alternatively, you can enquire with your clinician to see if they do Medicare e-claiming. This means that they will submit the claim on your behalf; though you will still need to pay the full session fee up-front if the session was not bulk-billed.

Group Counselling

• You must be, at the time of your consultation, located more than 15km by road away from the psychologists.

COVID Temporary Services

COVID-19 temporary services are bulk-billed. To access these services you must have a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP which is valid for up to 10 sessions, with a review after the 6th session.
