COVID-19 Temporary Telehealth Services: From March 30 2020 to March 31 2021, Medicare is offering rebates on telehealth therapy. All Medicare eligible Australians are eligible for these services. COVID-19 temporary services are bulk-billed. To access these services you must have a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP which is valid for up to 20 sessions, with a review after the 10th session (updated 9th October 2020).
Better Access Scheme: Medicare also offers rebates for online therapy as part of the ‘better health access scheme’. This means that only certain areas of Australia are eligible for online therapy rebates. In order to claim back on Medicare for online therapy you must:
- Not be an admitted patient to a hospital
- Be located within MMM areas 4-7. These can be checked by typing the address you have registered with Medicare into the MMM locator: http://www.doctorconnect.gov.au/internet/otd/publishing.nsf/Content/locator
- You must be, at the time of your consultation, located more than 15km by road away from the psychologist.
Claiming online therapy works the same as standard Medicare claiming for mental health services. You must have a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP which is valid for up to 20 sessions, with a review after the 10th session. All online therapy claims for your sessions at Neurocog will be done via e-claiming, meaning that the claims will be submitted on your behalf.
If you are uncertain about whether you fulfill the requirements for the ‘better health access scheme’ do not hesitate to contact us.
