Costs and Insurance:

Medicare offers rebates on therapy for psychologists, clinical psychologists, and psychiatrists. In order to be eligible for Medicare rebates, you will need to first acquire a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP. This care plan is valid for up to 10 sessions. After your 6th session, you will need to go back to your GP to have your care plan reviewed. Counselors and paraprofessionals are not covered by Medicare rebates.

Medicare Billing

The standard Medicare rebate amounts change depending on which type of professional you see. For a standard individual session the rebates are:
Psychiatrist: $221.30 for the initial consultation and $156.15 for subsequent 45 minute consultations.Clinical Psychologist: $124.50 (60 mins).Psychologist: $84.40 (60 mins).Other Professionals and Paraprofessionals fees may not be covered by Medicare.

Filing Medicare Claims

To easily claim your rebates you can use Medicare’s ‘mygov’ system for online claiming. You will need to keep a copy of your invoice for each session to do this. Alternatively, if you are seeing your clinician face-to-face you can enquire with them to see if they do Medicare e-claiming. This means that they will submit the claim on your behalf; though you will still need to pay the full session fee up-front.

Online Therapy Claims

Medicare offers rebates for online therapy only with psychologists, clinical psychologists, and psychiatrists as part of the ‘better health access scheme’. This means that only certain areas of Australia are eligible for online therapy rebates. In order to claim back on Medicare for online therapy you must:

Claiming online therapy works the same as standard Medicare claiming for mental health services. You must have a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP which is valid for up to 10 sessions, with a review after the 6th session. All online therapy claims for your sessions at Neurocog will be done via e-claiming, meaning that the claims will be submitted on your behalf.

If you are uncertain about whether you fulfill the requirements for the ‘better health access scheme’ do not hesitate to contact us.

Private Insurance

If you have private health insurance, please contact them directly for information about entitlements as rebates vary depending on which you are with and what type of cover you have. Currently, private health insurance does not cover online therapy.
